Wow. I had no idea propane could be used as a refrigerant.

yep, it even has its own refrigerant designation, R-290. Some of the small “dorm” refrigerators you can buy have isobutane (R-600a) refrigerant.

work perfectly fine so long as they don’t leak.

I learned something today :)

Is there a significant chance it could ignite if the compressor seized or something? Although I guess a leak would be more likely and dangerous in a car.

All of the Freeze 12 and Redtek type R-12 refrigerant replacement products that the EPA plays whack-a-mole banning the importation of are all basically propane or other similar mixes of hydrocarbons in cans with R-134 fittings on the top . Propane makes a fantastic refrigerant, and I’m told it is fairly commonly used in other parts of the world. Here, I only know of its approved use in certain stationary applications.

I think the flammability risk in mobile applications is really from collisions, although part of me thinks that is likely to be mitigated by some degree by how small the volume of gas is in an car’s A/C system. But what do I know, I’m not the EPA.

not unless the compressor seizure resulted in a leak, with an ignition source present. there’s no oxygen inside the refrigerant lines. an underhood leak would likely be low risk; the gas would vent outside of the car pretty quickly. an evaporator leak into the interior could be very dangerous, though.

Yeah, propane is used in things like commercial AC units normally.

The problem with using it in a car is when shady shops would tell the customer they’re putting in R12 and then put propane or butane in instead.

Wow, I’m learning all kinds of things today. Charging for R12 and putting in propane would make for a tidy ill-gotten profit.

Hey, Urambo and I were wanting to start a tool blog, but Kinja no longer let’s you start new side blogs. Would you be willing to transfer “ownership” of Uppermidwest Kinja to me, so we can convert it for that use?

Also, I still have that bitchin Kenwood headunit and CD changer with your name on it.

I’d like to hang onto it for now, I’ve been meaning to revive it but major surgery and the bank trying to foreclose on my house got in the way.
